In a natural disaster, like flood, fire ants remain connected by forming a structure made of legs and air pockets and save their colony. Air pockets are the structures to maintain the buoyancy of the raft.

“They’re literally building a new type of material with special properties, because of the way they connect up,” said David Hu, an expert from a research team understanding this mechanism.
