Few big breakout films, but still lots to like at Toronto International Film Festival

TORONTO — Big signs around the epicenter of the Toronto International Film Festival read, “This is your film festival,” a sentiment that fits this annual event’s reputation as a populist juggernaut. At the big gala shindigs, including Monday night’s showing of the superb new Reese Witherspoon movie Wild, suits and gowns mingled with jeans and T-shirts as patrons filed into the swanky Roy Thomson Hall.

Another sign of mere mortality: The film started about 45 minutes late, an issue that has plagued this year’s festival, which started Thursday and continues through Sunday.
