Chimpanzees use tools while hunting, but a new study reveals that females of the species use these implements, including spears, more often than their male counterparts. This discovery could provide anthropologists with a look at details of how hunting may have taken place among our own distant human ancestors.

Iowa State University investigators studied the hunting patterns of chimps in Fongoli, Senegal, in order to measure how often they use hunting implements, including primitive spears. In 2007, the same team reported observing chimps fashioning spears prior to a hunt.
