Feds downlist wood storks despite objections

NAPLES — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has declared the wood stork, an iconic endangered species in Southwest Florida, back from the brink.

In a move that drew swift criticism from Audubon of Florida, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell announced Tuesday morning at the bird's largest rookery in Georgia that FWS now considers the wood stork a threatened species, one step away from endangered.
