To protect the endangered species, the federal government has put 20 species of colorful corals on the list of threatened species. According to David Bernhart, an endangered-species official at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, much of the threat to the coral species is due to future estimated problems, which could occur because of global warming. These coral species are already being damaged by climate change but not to extent that they are endangered yet.
The agency looked for listing 66 species but they listed only 20 because of several reasons. All species are known as threatened but not endangered.
