Federal Government Extends Protection Area for Loggerhead Sea Turtles

The need to provide protection to vulnerable loggerhead sea turtles led the Federal Government to announce on Monday that hundreds of miles of coastline and ocean will be critical habitat for the creature. The extension in the protected area for the turtles -- listed as an endangered species -- includes beaches in Broward and Monroe counties.

The government has provided the largest critical habitat distinction in history, covering 685 miles of nesting beach and more than 300,000 square miles of ocean, said Amanda Keledjian, a marine scientist at Oceana, an ocean conservation organization.
