FDA introduces calorie counts on menus to fight obesity

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced long-delayed calorie labeling rules on Tuesday, requiring chain restaurants and large vending machine operators to disclose calorie counts on menus to make people more aware of the risks of obesity posed by fatty, sugary foods.

Establishments that sell prepared foods and have 20 or more locations must post the calorie content of food “clearly and conspicuously” on their menus and have until November 2015 to comply. Convenience stores, bakeries, coffee shops, amusement parks and vending machines must also comply.
