For Expats, Fewer Barriers to Having a Baby Overseas

More employees working overseas are at an age when they want to start families and yet people see a foreign assignment as a necessary element of their résumé, says Philip Catterton, managing director of London-based Integra Global, which offers health-insurance plans for expats. Just a few years ago, by contrast, expats were mostly young people looking for a backpacker-style adventure before settling down back home, or diplomats and midcareer professionals.

“The doors are open now to have babies abroad,” says Dan Ober, chief medical officer for the global health-insurance company Cigna in Wilmington, Del.
