Amir Hekmati's family announced his hunger strike in a statement posted on the freeamir.org website Tuesday. The family had earlier asked that the Red Cross be permitted to visit him in prison without guards to report on his well being.

"The conditions of Amir's imprisonment have deteriorated in recent months. His basic needs are no longer being met," the family said, describing poor conditions at the prison including blackouts, no heat, rat infestations and a diet of parasite-filled lentils and rice.
