Your first climb was Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa when you were 32. Why didn't you stop there and return to a much safer business career? From the time I was young I was intrigued by the stories of early Arctic and Antarctic explorers and early mountaineers. I read books and watched documentaries. I had a second heart surgery when I turned 30 and 18 months later I realized that if I wanted to know what it would be like to be an adventurer and be out there in those remote, extreme environments, I should get out there and do it.

Kilimanjaro is a very accessible mountain; it's not technical. It's really just a long hike, but I knew it would give me a taste of what it was like to be at altitude (what does at altitude mean?).
