Europe’s space probe Rosetta ends mission with planned crash on comet it chased for 12 years

During a slow final descent to “67P” the craft transmitted pictures and performed a last series of scientific measurements; this is the mission that in 2014 sent a lander to the rock’s surface, a cosmic first.

BERLIN—Europe’s comet-chasing space probe Rosetta performed its final task Friday, dipping out of orbit for a slow-motion crash onto the icy surface of the alien world it’s been following for more than a decade.
