Actor Ethan Hawke has portrayed characters without names in his two most recent films. In "Boyhood," he played "Dad," the anonymous father of Mason, the protagonist whose youth is depicted during the real-life span of 12 years. And in "Predestination," which opens Friday, Hawke is "Barkeep," whose job is a cover for his work as a time-traveling agent trying to stop a domestic terrorist from detonating a bomb.

While "Boyhood" is plotless and quiet and "Predestination" is urgent and stylized, both films meditate on the theme of personal identity throughout time.
