Just after he pledged to get the first U.S. health-care worker diagnosed with Ebola out of a West African hot zone and into a U.S. hospital, Franklin Graham realized he had a problem.

He had no airplane, didn’t know how he’d pay for one, and the virus was headed to a stage where it would send Kent Brantly’s body into convulsions. “Every second is important,” Graham said. “With Ebola you have less than a week of a window before death occurs.”
