EPA: Beaver, Lawrence counties would not meet proposed smog standards

Beaver County, along with the neighboring counties of Allegheny, Washington, Mercer and Lawrence counties, would not meet a new proposal from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to strengthen air-quality standards.

The EPA wants to lower ground-level ozone — also known as smog — to a range of 65 to 70 parts per billion, or ppb. Statistics from the agency show the ozone level in Beaver stands at 75 ppb, while Allegheny County is rated at 76 ppb. Washington County at 71 ppb, Lawrence, 73 ppb, and Mercer, 77 ppb....
