'Empire' has a solid foundation to build on

It's not sufficient, mind you. It would also be nice if this new, hot, music-powered soap (Fox, Wednesday, 9 ET/PT; *** out of four) from Oscar nominee Lee Daniels (The Butler, Precious) had a plot that felt more organic and less manufactured, and characters who felt more like people than cogs. But there's no denying that the show throbs with life — and offers enough of a promise of tuneful, scenery-chewing entertainment to make up for the familiarity of some of its twists.
