Elk herd killed after thin ice cracks

PAGOSA SPRINGS - A herd of 21 elk drowned at Echo Canyon Reservoir over the weekend after they had ventured onto thin ice that eventually broke under their weight.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers received reports from area residents the morning of Dec. 29 that dead elk were floating in the reservoir, which is located about five miles south of Pagosa Springs in Archuleta County.
