Salah Soltan, a former Dearborn, Mich., resident who led the Islamic university in Southfield, Mich., from 1999 to 2004 and is a leader in the Muslim Brotherhood, was convicted for his leadership role in the Islamist group. He was an active preacher in the Muslim Brotherhood, often speaking in mosques and on media outlets.

The same judge sentenced his son, Mohamed Soltan, also a former resident of Dearborn, on the same day to life in prison for financing anti-government protests in 2013 and spreading false news. The 27-year-old man has been on a hunger strike for more than a year, family members and supporters said.
