How effective are flu and cold remedies?

In a health advisory bulletin released earlier this month by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it was reported that about half the viruses detected so far this year in the U.S. had a somewhat different genetic makeup than what the vaccine was designed to cover, and thus the vaccine likely will be somewhat less effective -- and possibly much less effective -- in protecting against those viruses.

The bottom line is that the flu shot should work well for about half the flu bugs around this season and somewhat less well for the other half. But even some benefit is better than none, so you definitely should still get your flu shot.
