The Ebola Vaccine is Plant Made: What Does that Mean?

Usually, vaccines are prepared by using what’s known as an “attenuated” version of the pathogen or by taking the potentially dangerous organism that causes disease and rendering it inactive but still capable of provoking an immune response in the body. This is usually done in the lab through use of different kinds of cell cultures. However, those cultures can be easily contaminated without hope of a quick fix, and require a great deal of time and money spent on them if we are to refine our vaccines.

However “plant made” or, to be more accurate, plant-derived vaccines work slightly differently and have a number of advantages.
