Based on an analysis of patients in the largest ICD registry in the U.S., the 3-year, all-cause mortality in ICD patients with a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) between 30% and 35% was 51.4% versus 55.0% among matched patients without an ICD (hazard ratio 0.83, 95% CI 0.69-0.99, P=0.04), reported Sana M. Al-Khatib, MD, MHS, of Duke Clinical Research Institute, and colleagues.

"This subgroup actually constitutes a large proportion of patients getting defibrillators in the U.S. today, even though they have not been well represented in clinical trials," Al-Khatib told MedPage Today. "Our findings can be seen as reassuring evidence to support current guidelines."
