Drug-resistant strain of infectious illness hits U.S.

A drug-resistant strain of the food-borne bacteria Shigella has made its way to the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reportreleased on April 3.

The bacteria causes Shigellosis, a diarrhea-inducing intestinal infection that can vary in severity and infects approximately 500,000 people in the U.S. every year. The disease comes with a host of unpleasant symptoms, including acute muscle cramping, nausea and vomiting.
