'The Drop' goes deep in a rough part of town | The Salt Lake Tribune

The gangster drama "The Drop" is drenched in atmosphere, soaked in a brooding palette of dread that informs us early on that bad things will be happening to someone by the movie’s end — and then sets out to depict those bad things.

What raises "The Drop" above the crowd is who is on the giving and receiving ends of those bad things. Belgian director Michaël R. Roskam ("Bullhead") pulls together a strong cast, led by powerful performances by Tom Hardy and, in his last role before his death last year, James Gandolfini.
