Maggie Smith, the Oscar-winning actress whose Downton Abbey character serves as the sarcastic centerpiece of the period drama, has announced that she will leave the show after its sixth season. Smith, who has earned two Emmys, two SAG awards, and a Golden Globe for the role, made the confession during an interview with The Sunday Times.
While discussing whether the show’s upcoming sixth season will be its last, Smith said, “They say this is the last one, and I can't see how it could go on.” She added, “I mean, I certainly can't keep going . . . To my knowledge, [the Dowager Countess] must be 110 by now. We're into the late 1920s.”
