The classic story of Russian life before and after the October Revolution becomes a Broadway musical.
At least one of the musicals that I see on Broadway each season leaves me shaking my head and muttering “What were they thinking?” on the way out of the theater. “Doctor Zhivago,” which purports to be adapted from Boris Pasternak’s 1957 novel of Russian life before and after the October Revolution b...

I wish voters were as skilled critics as theatre goers.

I loved the movie and have seen it many times. I can't imagine any of today's actresses being in the same area code as the gorgeous Julie Christie.

I only know of the show from passing the theater it's appearing in.Considering that the movie is considered an ''epic," with even an intermission, and the book is very long, I said to myself, "What were the producers thinking to put a show of this magnitude to Broadway, and having to fit it into a little over two hours? There's got to be something lost in a stage show...."I guess I was right.

Too bad.The world needs more so-called "old-fashioned," romantic, glamorous, boy-meets-girl musicals with well-crafted, memorable songs and choreography. Something other than reconstituted rock set in the ghetto or barrio, or p.c. perversions with foul-mouth lyrics. This is obviously not it.

If there is anyone out there who can't get enough of Dr. Zhivago (via the book and David Lean's epic) and if somehow, you've not seen the Russian Central Production multi-episode DVD production, rent it or buy it: either way, it will be a much better (and far less costly) investment than Broadway musical nonsense.

I saw the play Saturday night and I left the show wondering "what were they thinking." I would not recommend this musical to anyone. The song Somewhere My Love was just shoved in wherever. The other songs are not memorable; the acting was weak. They over used the rail car prop, the loud guns, and the flames.

"Worst of all, though, is Michael Weller’s book, in which “Doctor Zhivago” is rewritten in the action-packed manner of a Classics Illustrated comic."Ouch!

So harsh? ... I feel sorry for the actors...Pasternak was a great poet. Did we at least get some good lyrics from this theatrical adaption?

The book was truly great. I read it several times when it was printed. The movie was great. I saw it twice. The play, I shall not see, but will read the book again.

So was he trying to say he didn't like it? Don't sugarcoat it, give me the word on the street!
