A new study examines the potential relationship for maternal depression and the likelihood that her children will grow up to participate in more risky behaviors like smoking marijuana or drinking recklessly—particularly during teenage years—or smoke cigarettes.

According to the study, women who experience emotional instability or depression are more likely to have teenagers who not only use these substances but also may be more likely to act out in delinquent or violent ways when they reach their impressionable teenage years.
