How did this newly discovered asteroid develop a comet’s tail?

The object was long thought to be a normal asteroid.

Active asteroids are a strange class of objects in our solar system. Like other asteroids, they enjoy stable orbits between those of Mars and Jupiter. However, unlike typical asteroids, active asteroids have tails of ejected dust and gas, much like comets.
