As fog swirled through the Whitechapel streets in the small hours of an autumn morning in 1888, three men stepped out of the Imperial Club in Duke’s Place, a minute’s walk from Aldgate Tube station.

They were about to witness the prelude to a crime that would not be solved for well over a century — until DNA evidence apparently brought the mystery of Jack the Ripper to a close this week.
