Despite risk of birth defects, prescription painkillers still popular in women of childbearing age: study 

Many women age 15 to 44 are filling prescriptions for opioids, even though taking them during pregnancy can increase the odds of birth defects. Many women may not even know they’re pregnant when taking them.

Prescription painkillers are used widely by U.S. women of childbearing age, a federal report released on Thursday found, and health officials said exposure to such drugs during pregnancy could increase the risk of birth defects.
