“David Bowie Is” Documentary Scratches the Surface of Rock’s Cracked Actor

Jarvis Cocker thinks David Bowie writes like a girl. At least that’s how the Pulp frontman began his brief address at the final night of the Victoria & Albert Museum’s “David Bowie Is” exhibition, speaking literally about Bowie’s handwriting — scrawled pages of lyrics peppered throughout the retrospective filled the museum’s halls from March to August of 2013. There, nestled between video clips and wild costumes, Cocker found his own answer to the question implicitly posed by the show’s madlib-like title: “To see [the lyrics] written in his own writing that’s slightly childish, that got me thinking about — maybe that was part of his appeal, you know? He was one of us.”

Though this speech was initially delivered to that night’s small audience in London, it’s now poised to drop nationwide as part of the specially commissioned “David Bowie Is” documentary, directed by event TV vet Hamish Hamilton.
