'Daredevil' review: Netflix gets gritty (and makes you forget Ben Affleck in red leather)

In "Daredevil," Netflix's take on one shadowy corner of the Marvel Universe, the fight scenes are often better appreciated by the ears than the eyes -- it's the cavalcade of crunching bones and sickeningly juicy sploosh of crushed skulls in the show's ultra-violent beatdowns that signal Marvel's turn from the Kodachrome ka-pow! of its big-budget movies toward a grittier, more adult-oriented production.

This is a smart, simmering human-scale crime drama that transcends the superhero genre -- but don't worry, there's plenty of grist for fanboys and girls.
