Danger in the crib? More than half of U.S. babies sleep in unsafe conditions

More than half of infants in the United States are still sleeping in unsafe conditions in cribs containing blankets, pillows and other loose bedding that has been shown to dramatically raise the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, a new government study finds.

Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found the numbers of parents putting their babies down with loose bedding had gone down from a high of 86 percent in 1993 to 54 percent in 2010 amid a slew of public service announcements.
