Costumed chicken, egg, polar bear among those who took the Polar Bear Plunge

According to thermometers, the water temperature in the Monongahela River on New Year’s Day was a balmy 42 degrees. Still, of the hundreds of Pittsburghers lining the Mon Wharf parking lot for the annual Polar Bear Plunge, no one felt obliged to bring any ice.

“It’s still cold,” said Frank Nelson, president of the Polar Bear Club and participant in the New Year’s Day event for 51 years. While an unseasonable December may have lifted the temperature above the average of the high 30s, “It makes no difference.”
