Cosmic, romantic collide in 'Constellations'

The most prominent scenic feature in 2012's off-Broadway production of If There is I Haven't Found It Yet, which marked the American stage debut of Jake Gyllenhaal, was water. By the end of director Michael Longhurst's staging of this promising but rather precious work by the young British playwright Nick Payne, actors were sloshing around in a contained, no doubt symbolic, pond.

For Constellations (* * * ½ out of four stars), the more fully realized effort that brings Gyllenhaal, Payne and Longhurst to Broadway for the first time, set designer Tom Scutt has provided balloons in lieu of liquid.
