Cosmic dust grains formed in supernova blasts

Sen—Clouds of cosmic dust, which pervade the Universe and from which planets form, are produced in huge quantities by violent supernova explosions, new research has found.

These grains, made up of elements such as carbon, silicon, oxygen, iron, and magnesium, are even able to survive the huge shockwaves that follow such powerful, star-destroying blasts.
