Convicted Putin foe detained en route to protest

Only hours after he was convicted of fraud and given a suspended sentence, Alexei Navalny, the anti-corruption campaigner who is a leading foe of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was detained after evading house arrest Tuesday to join an unsanctioned protest by the Kremlin.

"House arrest, yes. But today I very much want to be with you," he said on Twitter. "So I am going to Manezh Square."
