Consumer prices a mixed bag

WASHINGTON — Consumer prices in May lodged their biggest increase since 2013, driven mostly by gasoline costs that jumped sharply after months of declines, the Labor Department said Thursday.

Taking out volatile energy and food prices, so-called core prices rose 0.1 percent, the smallest increase since December and a sign of lingering weakness in the U.S. economic recovery. Food prices were unchanged in May for the second straight month.
