A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew lifted a sick crew member off a cruise ship in the Pacific 260 miles south of San Diego and brought him to a hospital for treatment.

The long-range rescue was organized when the crew of the cruise ship Star Princess reported at midmorning Wednesday that a 28-year-old man had symptoms of acute appendicitis. At the time the ship was more than 350 miles south of San Diego en route to Los Angeles.
