Co-pilot in German airliner crash kept his illness hidden

DÜSSELDORF, Germany — Andreas Lubitz, the pilot who flew a Germanwings jetliner into the French Alps on Tuesday, had a medical condition that he kept hidden from his employer, authorities said Friday.

Authorities did not reveal the exact nature of Lubitz’s illness. But Germany’s Bild newspaper reported that Lubitz had been treated for at least one “serious depressive episode” so bad that he had to suspend flight training for several months in 2009.
