Approximately 7 thousand years ago, the coasts of northern Chile and southern Peru were inhabited by a group of people called the Chinchorro. They were primarily fishermen, practicing their trade in the rich Pacific waters, as the arid Atacama Desert did not offer hunting or agricultural opportunities.

The Chinchorro is a most fascinating tribe, but their burial practices set them apart from others. Preceding the Egyptians with several thousands of years, the Chinchorro used to mummify its dead, creating the oldest known mummies on Earth.
