George Orwell’s portrayal of a bleak future under all-consuming state power and control is a classic work of fiction. But in many ways, Orwell’s 1984 could have been called 1989. Since June 4 that year, China has been playing out its own Orwellian narrative.
It began with the repression of citizens by the state for the "good of the many". It continues with the erasure and rewriting of history to continue a party line.
