China’s Plans to Flatten Mountains May Have Far reaching consequences

China is the most populated country in the world, and even though stringent laws are in place to control further population growth, China still finds it hard to accommodate her people, they are running out of land to build on. To resolve this problem, about 10 years ago, local governments started chopping off mountaintops to fill in valleys and creating more level surface to build on.

Notable among these projects is one that aims at flattening 700 mountains around Lanzhou that will create over 250 square kilometers of flatlands another in Yan’an that will create 78.5 square kilometers of land and nearly double the city’s size.
