China Detains 11 in Deadly Tianjin Blasts

The group includes transport and customs officials, local work-safety regulators and top executives at Tianjin Port (Group) Co., the state-owned company that runs one of the world’s busiest maritime gateways, the official Xinhua News Agency said, citing China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate, which opened a criminal investigation days after the blasts.

Investigators believe the 11 people had failed to properly carry out their supervisory and regulatory powers over businesses that handle hazardous chemicals at the port, including the dockside warehouse where the Aug. 12 blasts took place, Xinhua said.
