Measles is not only deadly, it is robust. It lives for up to two hours in the airspace of a contaminated person, and it is so contagious that 90 percent of those who haven't been vaccinated are likely to become infected if they breathe the same air or touch a common surface.

So any careful parent isn't being paranoid in their belief that the days of taking any infant into a public place is over -- not when a child's first MMR jab comes at 12 months, anyway.
