COVER STORY: A year in spaceOn July 8, 2011 the space shuttle Atlantis took off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on the 135th and final flight of NASA's shuttle program. Many thought it signaled the end of our country's manned exploration of space, but this week astronaut Scott Kelly will make history when he blasts off in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft bound for the International Space Station.

Kelly is scheduled to spend a year in space -- the longest stretch ever for a U.S. astronaut.
