Catalina Island foxes, the top predator on Catalina Island, have returned from the brink in what may be the quickest recovery of an endangered American land mammal, officials said Wednesday. At the same time, they announced a status review that could take the fox off the endangered species list in two years.
Four subspecies of fox across the Channel Islands, including the Catalina population, were originally declared endangered. All have made a comeback. The Catalina fox’s recovery has been particularly dramatic.
