Caramel color added in soda contains carcinogen

A new study has revealed that presence of carcinogens in the caramel color added to cold drinks increases the risk of cancer among people with high consumption. The chemical, 4-methylimidazole (4-MEI), is produced as a byproduct when caramel color is formed in soft drinks. Findings of the study have been published in the journal PLOS ONE.

“Soft drink consumers are being exposed to an avoidable and unnecessary cancer risk from an ingredient that is being added to these beverages simply for aesthetic purposes”, said Keeve Nachman, senior author of the study.
