An American doctor exposed to the Ebola virus in Sierra Leone was admitted to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda — just less than 11 miles from this university — on Sept. 28.

The next week, a patient was admitted to Howard University Hospital in an Ebola scare that turned out to be unfounded. And on Wednesday, Thomas Duncan became the first person to die from the virus in the U.S.
