California Ignites Minimum Smoking Age Debate, Proposes Increase to 21

Lawmakers for California State have ignited a campaign that could see the minimum smoking age increased from 18 to 21 years. Should the proposal go ahead, it will be the first time any US state has imposed a 21-year minimum age limit on the purchase and use of tobacco products.

The bill was proposed by Senator Ed Hernandez on Thursday and is expected to trigger an unprecedented backlash from not only smokers’ right groups, but America’s most powerful tobacco companies.
