Box-office preview: 'The Hobbit’ goes into battle one last time

This week's terrorist threat against movie theaters didn't seem to slow moviegoing Wednesday night, as "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" made an estimated $24.5 million out of the gate. The third and final installment in Warner Bros.' fantasy franchise is playing in 3,875 theaters, per Box Office Mojo data, with Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Lee Pace, Orlando Bloom and Evangeline Lilly all returning for, as the tagline reads, "one last time."

After the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy reaped $2.9 billion worldwide in the early 2000s, director Peter Jackson attempted to recapture the magic by spreading J.R.R.
