Box-office preview: 'Big Hero 6,' 'Interstellar' to soar past $50 million each

Two sci-fi tentpoles hit the multiplex this weekend, and both are tracking to gross more than $50 million. That's because one is an animated adventure for kids, and the other a cerebral epic for adults. Such a blockbuster faceoff has happened only three times before — when "Wall-E" went up against "Wanted" in 2008, "Madagascar 3" against "Prometheus" in 2012, and "Monsters University" against "World War Z" in 2013. In each case, the cartoon beat out the live-action, and that looks like that'll be the case again this time.

Playing in 3,761 theaters, per Box Office Mojo data, "Big Hero 6," loosely based on a Marvel comic, centers on a boy genius and his lovable inflatable robot Baymax who band together with some college-student scientists to form a team of high-tech superheroes.
